maybe you better sit down for this

If I had been standing, my knees would have gone weak when I read this:

Last year, Oakland’s Ad Valorem rate was 1.33% of the tax value of the property. This year, somehow it magically has risen to 1.41%. If anyone understands how this came to be, I’d be very interested in knowing. I was unaware the electorate had passed a bunch of large new taxes.

Um...Okay...If I was completely terrified before, I'm whatever is one notch above that right now. In my last post I wrote:

Oh yeah, and not that people in my current neighborhood aren't liberal (they are, very) but the new neighborhood appears to be full of those hardcore IN YOUR FACE liberals who also have money and are therefore the absolutely most annoying type of liberal there is.

It looks like not only are they generally annoying, they will have the power to cause my wallet a large amount of pain if we do buy this home.

Read the entire thing if you are remotely interested as the author makes excellent points about resale values and why voters who are homeowners might vote to approve these ridiculous taxes.

As an aside, why is it I've never read this guy's blog before? If nothing else comes of this at least I have a new blog to read.

awesome

Paul and I got stuck in a bit of a traffic jam on the Embarcadaro on our way home today. When we passed the ferry building we saw why: protesters. Global-warming-if-you-love-your-kids-you'd-be-a-vegan protesters. Who were taking their sweet, sweet time walking back and forth inside the crosswalks.

I was not a happy camper.

I hate traffic. And I REALLY HATE holier-than-thou protesters who are getting between me and my dinner. Which yes, involves meat, oh-so-delicious meat.

Anyway, there was this monster-truck style tricked out red pickup a couple cars ahead of us, right in front of the crosswalk and I saw some people talking to the dude in the pickup. I figured it was probably not a friendly conversation since this guy clearly wasn't overly concerned about carbon emissions and then something AWESOME happened.

The light changed and the protesters finally cleared the crosswalk and as the truck pulled away he gunned his engine and blew a cloud of dark exhaust into the crowd as he sped off.

Day 3: when in doubt, blame the Bush administration

I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried. As I walked to meet Paul and a friend for dinner I was stopped by a polite looking young man.

"Sorry to bother you, but I'm just here on a short trip."

I was expecting him to ask me for directions, which is more often than not the case here, but instead he whipped out a stack of papers at which point I knew I was about to be asked for money.

From the look of him I was expecting ACLU or Greenpeace or some other hippie-liberal organization, but instead?

"During the Bush Administration a microchip was implanted into my brain stem [points to a document with a picture of a brain on it]. I'm trying to raise $28 so I can get a state ID so I can have surgery to have the chip removed."

Um, what?

mommies gone wild

The other day I was reading some mommy blog, and as most mommy blogs seem to be the blogger clearly skewed towards the left side of the political spectrum. To put it mildly.

Anyway, it took me a few reads to get the gist of her post because it was rather nonspecific railing about how a picture of her daughter pretending to breast-feed a dolly was beautiful and how we should teach our kids that Barb*ie can fall in love with Barb*ie and basically that California sucks and breastfeeding dollies is good (I assume it had something to do with the Prop 8 ruling but not sure where breastfeeding comes into the picture). O...kay.

For the record, I never really cared much about gay marriage one way or another, I am somewhat naturally inclined towards being against it but I don't see the world coming to an end if it happens to go the other way (har har)...I only started actually paying attention to the whole debate when it started being shoved down my throat (i.e. naked make-out sessions in a park with children playing a few yards away, the summary classification of people who aren't ardently pro-gay marriage as ignorant homophobes, so on and so forth).

But really, I'd like to address the whole weird pro-breastfeeding reference in her post. I am all for breastfeeding, I think it's great for the babies, for mother-infant bonding, and I plan on doing it myself if at all possible. I also think women who choose not to breastfeed have their reasons and that's fine too. After hearing both wonderful and nightmarish breastfeeding stories I've come to the conclusion that there is no right or wrong and honestly, who cares whether or not someone else chooses to breastfeed their offspring?

That said, when Paul and I were in Miami this past January we enjoyed a lovely afternoon at the Lincoln Road outdoor mall, sipping sangria and people watching. A woman walked by with her shirt up and a child literally hanging off her boob. Her nipple was the size of a sand dollar. I almost spit up my sangria.

Sure breastfeeding is a beautiful thing and all, but um, dude? Seriously? I don't need to see that.

From what I know most of my cousins who are mothers have breastfed their babies at least for some time. I've heard some of them complain about what a pain it is to go out when they're breastfeeding because they always have to plan ahead and make sure there's a place to do the feedings (none of them are into the whole breastfeed in public thing). But for those who don't mind breastfeeding in a public place, what's so hard about finding a nice bench to sit down on and carrying a blanket to throw over yourself? I've seen plenty of women breastfeed in a modest way in public, so why do some have the need/desire to shove it in everyone's face?

I'm not crazy right? What would you think if you saw that?

Assorted questions...

1. Why is it better to hold terror war prisoners indefinitely without trial in supermax prisons within the United States than to hold them at Gitmo? Doesn't holding prisoners indefinitely in a federal supermax set a more dangerous precedent than holding them at Gitmo (which much more closely resembles a POW camp than does a supermax prison which holds prisoners that have been tried and convicted in U.S. federal courts)? Can any Obama supporters out there please explain this to me?

2. Why do people try to make a comparison between Kobe and MJ? MJ won six championships in ten years and was Finals MVP six times. Kobe has three championships in thirteen years and has never been Finals MVP. That means Jordan was "the man" all six times he won and Kobe (in three extra years) has only won half as many rings and has never been "the man." Even if gets it this year, that's still one vs six. No comparison, in my mind and I'm not even a big Jordan fan (I prefer Magic's style of play).

3. Why do I sometimes still get the feeling like I'm waiting for my "real" life to begin? I have a career (sort of, well, I'm employed in my industry of choice so close enough I suppose) and a husband. And a cat. When does it count as "real life?"

anyone surprised that she's a hardcore lefty liberal?

There's something I've been wanting to write about for awhile and yet haven't been quite sure how to without sounding too snarky and judge-y. But let's face it, I am being a bit judge-y and I don't necessarily think that it's wrong in this case because...well...read on.

I've been following this girl's blog off and on for awhile. I check in whenever I'm bored or happen to notice it in my bookmarks list not because it's particularly entertaining or well-written but mainly because she seems like such a train-wreck it's hard to look away. She's a couple years older than me, married to a much older, HIV positive man who's a former intravenous drug user (hence the HIV). She herself is a recovering alcoholic. She's still working on her undergraduate degree (her graduation date from State is constantly being pushed back due to incomplete courses and the like) and she earns money by babysitting. Not sure what her husband does but since she's written about fighting over things like whether or not to buy a new mop for $2 I feel it's safe to say he's not raking it in. They share a 2-bedroom apartment with a roommate somewhere in one of the less nice neighborhoods of SF. Oh and here's the kicker: They're trying very hard to get pregnant. Including through artificial means (since they kind of have to cause of the HIV and all).

As much as I love reading those infertility blogs where the couple eventually manages to conceive and posts a zillion adorable baby pictures, I've always held my breath a little every time I clicked onto her site. And then I would breathe a sigh of relief when I read her latest rant and was assured that she was still unsuccessful in her quest for procreation.

Until a couple weeks ago, that is, when I read about her first positive home pregnancy test. My heart dropped into my stomach and I felt angry, angry suddenly that we live in a country where we have to take a test to drive a car but any jackass can have a baby. I'm not saying that people who don't have all their ducks in a row should not be allowed to have children (see how annoyed I I am, I just used a triple negative), but I don't think that people in situations like the one she is in should be actively trying to bring a child into their roller-coaster of a world. If it happens, it happens, but to purposely bring a child into the world when you can't even provide for yourself? When there's a strong possibility your husband could get very sick and even die in the not so distant future? Does that not seem the least bit irresponsible to anyone else but me?? Her blog doesn't get a lot of readers but so far all the comments have been happy and supportive which I suppose is the norm. I don't like to post comments on blogs where I lurk (and in case you haven't noticed, I am not linking it here either) but I'm VERY tempted to in this case. But I won't. Because I know it won't make a difference.

The fact that she lives in SF only irritates me more because I know that I am going to end up being one of those sucker taxpayers who ends up contributing to her selfish need to procreate when she doesn't have the means to raise a kid without a government handout.

Ugh.

Stupid amusing liberal of the day: Leo

So Paul and I arrived home from our dinner at Auqa in Kowloon (which I'll write about later) just in time to hear Leonardo DiCaprio talking about his new movie with Russell Crowe about the war on terror. He was saying that though it is a political movie he doesn't believe they injected their political views into the movie because they "villify both sides equally" or something along those lines...

Um, Leo? Hate to break it to you buddy, but there's a significant portion of Americans who don't believe we're just as "evil" as they are. That IS your political view dumbass.

Don't you just love it when a bunch of liberals get together and try to make a political movie that "represents both sides" except they actually have no clue what the other side even thinks to begin with?

the sky is falling

Holy cow, things seem to get more dire by the day. WAMU was trading at a 1 handle for awhile today and so was AIG for those of you following along at home. Fun stuff.

Turns out this whole credit crisis is about to hit a lot closer to home for yours truly as my job may now be in jeopardy thanks to the events that unfolded today. (People in the know might now very well know which company I'm working for but since I think mainly only friends read this anyway, I don't really care). Ah well, at least if things really go south it'll come with a severance package and an unemployment check. And I'll take it as a sign from God that yes, it is time to go and get that MBA after all.

There were lots of jokes flying around about our job security in the office today, we all laughed but I'm pretty sure everyone was crying a little bit inside.

Still, things could be worse. Of course, they'll probably get worse so I shouldn't be saying that. It still boggles my mind how most people don't get how serious things are, how it WILL affect EVERYONE and not just those big bad wall street banker types...

And while we're talking about all this, Hot Air has a great post entitled: Whose policies led to the credit crisis? which links to a 2003 NYT article with some awesome quotes from Democrats that make me wonder who re-elected these chumps?? And will they continue to be re-elected even now when it's become apparent how completely retarded and even dangerous they are when it comes to our economy?

"These two entities - Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac - are not facing any kind of financial crisis," said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. "The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing."

Representative Melvin L. Watt, Democrat of North Carolina, agreed.

"I don’t see much other than a shell game going on here, moving something from one agency to another and in the process weakening the bargaining power of poorer families and their ability to get affordable housing," Mr. Watt said.

Erm, yeah, as Bart Simpson would say, the ironing is delicious. If only it weren't so sad. Read the whole thing if you care to be well informed on the genesis of this entire crisis.

Obama campaign mocks former POW for being disabled at the hands of America's enemies

Over at The Corner people have been wondering if perhaps there is a reason McCain doesn't use the computer or email...and they've found their answer:

McCain gets emotional at the mention of military families needing food stamps or veterans lacking health care. The outrage comes from inside: McCain's severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes. Friends marvel at McCain's encyclopedic knowledge of sports. He's an avid fan - Ted Williams is his hero - but he can't raise his arm above his shoulder to throw a baseball. - Boston Globe (March 4, 2000)

Hm. So I guess this Obama ad is basically mocking a POW for the injuries he sustained in service of America. Stay classy Obama, stay classy.

It's kind of like the time Biden told a guy in a wheel chair to stand up. What exactly does the Obama campaign have against people with disabilities?

Judgment to lead?

Apparently, Obama is finally conceding the undeniable fact that the surge is working. From his interview with Bill O'Reilly:

"I think that the surge has succeeded in ways that nobody anticipated," Obama said while refusing to retract his initial opposition to the surge. "I've already said it's succeeded beyond our wildest dreams."

Of course, being Obama, he's conveniently forgotten that one man certainly anticipated the success of the surge - that man being John McCain of course. Oops.

Obama also says in the interview that Iran is a "'major threat' and it would be 'unacceptable' for the rogue nation to develop a nuclear weapon" which is certainly a far cry from his own words earlier this year:

"I mean think about it, Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, these countries are tiny compared to the Soviet Union, they don't pose a serious threat to us the way the Soviet Union posed a threat to us...You know Iran they spend 1/100th of what we spend on the military. I mean if Iran ever tried to pose a serious threat to us they wouldn't stand a chance..."

Of course it actually makes sense that Obama would completely contradict his own words from just a few months ago. Its pretty much become standard operating procedure for him to at first just say whatever comes naturally into his liberal head...and then later deciding that maybe John McCain is right after all and he better just say something similar. Need another example? How about his reaction to the Russian invasion of Georgia?

Sounds to me like the left's Anointed One is more of a follower than a leader.

like we needed any more proof that liberals are just full of you-know-what

Does anyone else find it really ironic that the liberal feministas who have spent years telling us that women can "have it all" (very Sex and the City, no?) are now questioning whether Governor Palin can be both a mother and the VP. What are they saying? That a woman can't be a mother and perform a tough a job as well as a man at the same time?

Not that I was really expecting liberals to have a rational reaction to the Palin pick...they are after all, well, liberals.

cry me a river

This article is one of those where the SF Chron writers were clearly going for sympathetic sob story but have totally missed the mark.

It's got all the elements - family who has owned their home for 54 years, two elderly parents suffering from dementia, except oops, little details reveal some less than sympathetic details:

Most foreclosures nowadays are homes purchased just a year or two ago with no money down. But the Gardners' home is different. Joann's parents, Johnnie Gardner, 87, and Estelle, 88, bought the two-bedroom in the Sobrante Park neighborhood in 1954 for $11,500. His salary as an electrician at the Oakland naval shipyard allowed them to make the payments.

But in recent years, Joann and her brother refinanced it several times for increasingly larger amounts.

The final refinance at the end of 2006 left the family owing $454,000. The monthly payments of $3,362 exceeded the household income of $3,144.

What happened to the money from all the refinances?

Gardner can't quite say. Some went to paying off credit cards; some was eaten up in huge loan fees. What is clear is that the family has not made a mortgage payment since December 2006.

Sounds to me like they were using mom and dad's house as their own personal piggy bank. How do you lose track of $454,000? And how much of this money are we really supposed to believe went to fees? Even if they were charged a ridiculous rate like 20% that's still over $350,000...Not to mention they've been living there for free since 2006, pretty ironic that elsewhere in the story they mention how they're getting a $1,500 check for moving out "early."

Since it's SFGate.com there are always some really goofy comments like this one:

impeach_bush 8/10/2008 7:22:39 AM

There should be a law against evicting anyone from a home that has passed through one generation or more. There would also be safeguards in place with regard to using that home for financial gains to just to insure the home would never be repossessed.

Boys and girls, if "impeach_bush" had his way and such a law was indeed enacted, what do the laws of supply and demand say would happen?

Yup, you guessed it, no more loans for anyone who's home has passed through one generation more.

If I didn't know better I would have almost thought it was a sarcastic comment, but given the source, I'm guessing it's a completely serious statement...And that's pretty scary. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say this guy is an Obama supporter.

wondering how they make it through the day without hurting themselves

It's pretty sad when your opponent is so ignorant that you actually have to explain to them how you're mocking them before they get it.

For all their talk of intellect, they sure seem to have a tough time grasping some fairly simple concepts.

Slaying suspect once found sanctuary in S.F.

Why am I not surprised?

The man charged with killing a father and two sons on a San Francisco street last month was one of the youths who benefited from the city's long-standing practice of shielding illegal immigrant juveniles who committed felonies from possible deportation, The Chronicle has learned.

Kudos to the Chronicle for continuing to investigate and shine light on this story. There's a lot to dislike about the paper but in this case they are definitely doing the right thing. I know a lot of San Franciscans were worried that this story would fade into memory but I think it really has the potential to be a rallying cry for forcing some common sense onto our city government. Especially in light of this newest development.

At the end of the article, a government lawyer says he "doesn't know" if the killings could have been prevented, but the widow of Tony Bologna (who also lost two of her precious sons) has it exactly right:

Danielle Bologna, however, said that if the government had done its job, the killings of her husband and two sons "would never have happened."

"It was senseless," she said. "And to think they didn't deport him back, knowing that he did not have papers and he was here illegally, it is a big issue.

"They need to take responsibility, the city," Bologna said. "They didn't do anything. ... He should have been deported. This is huge. I'm extremely angry about this."

Any lawyers out there know if she can sue the city for negligence or something along those lines?

I wonder

At what point during this election I'll stop being so shocked that there are intelligent people out there who support a candidate as clearly inexperienced as Barack Obama (and not inexperienced in an endearing innocent way but in a fumbling bumbling arrogant way, like someone who doesn't know they just don't get it).

Can someone explain it to me? Because I just don't get it?

Yesterday, Newsom said in a news conference that he had no authority to order illegal immigrant juveniles be turned over to federal law enforcement. I guess he really just needed to sleep on it, because apparently today, he found just such authority.

8 crack dealers shielded by S.F. walk away

So if Paul and I really do end up buying a home in the city, I guess this kind of crap is what our property taxes will be funding. Suddenly the commute from the suburbs isn't looking so bad...Sad because I really do love so much about this city.

Thanks again liberals!

the ironing is delicious

Wow. Just, wow. I think Newsom has completely lost touch with reality.

Mayor Gavin Newsom struck a defiant note in a news conference at which, flanked by a cadre of federal, state and local law enforcement leaders, he announced a series of new anti-gun initiatives.

"To the NRA, we just say, 'Stay away. ... Let us protect our citizens,' " Newsom said. He also said the gun organization should direct some of its attention to the Bush administration, since the federal government approves Housing Authority leases.

Way to "protect your citizens" Newsom. I'm sure Danielle Bologna appreciates it...oh wait...maybe not.

surprise, surprise, the suspect is a gang member

So the story behind the slaughtering of the Bologna family here in SF keeps getting more and more...predictable:

He spoke only once during the proceeding before Judge Henry Ramsey in San Francisco Superior Court, saying "yes" when asked whether Edwin Ramos was his true name.

The three murder counts carry special circumstances of multiple murder and murder as part of a street gang, which both carry the potential of life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty.

Police say Ramos is a member of the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang, but authorities have not said how the killings were gang motivated.

...

Ramos' immigration status has become a side issue in the case. O'Sullivan says Ramos is in the country legally and has applied for permanent residence here. But Virginia Kice, spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said Friday that the agency believes he is an illegal immigrant and has put an immigration hold on him.

"We believe he's deportable," Kice said. The agency has asked the city to notify it when Ramos' case is completed.

And then of course there's this article that is hidden deep in the depths of the Chronicle website...

Ramos was also booked on felony weapons charges and as well as a separate count of being in a criminal street gang. Police cited "numerous documented contacts" that officers had with Ramos and Lopez, and said both were "active members of the MS-13 street gang."

...

Police sent the case to prosecutors in District Attorney Kamala Harris' office, who declined to file charges. They told investigators that there was no evidence that Ramos had known that Lopez had a gun, according to Harris' office.

So to sum it up, assuming this really is the guy who committed these disgusting murders, the police had their man in custody and knew that he was in fact a member of MS-13, currently known as the most violent and brutal street gang in America, but thanks to a D.A. who believes it's her job to hug criminals and "understand" how they came to be sub-human scum, and our mayor who likes to advertise the fact that San Francisco is a sanctuary city....well this animal was free to murder a hard-working father and his two young sons, both with bright futures ahead of them.

Yes, liberals, your policies are clearly working.

Protesters at their classiest

Why am I not surprised?

Arborists and workers hired by the university dodged human waste and other debris as they cut ropes that ran from one tree to another and removed supplies that protesters had stored in the branches, Mogulof said.

Several workers wearing helmets and protective garments were splashed with urine, as were two UC police officers, Mogulof said. One arborist was hit twice in the face by a tree-dweller, he said.

(emphasis mine)

I think if you only read the parts I bolded you'd think this was a story about monkeys. Protesters are pretty close though I guess.

(Okay, so I guess you'd have to replace the words "human waste" with something more generic like "feces" to really think it was about monkeys, but you get the point!)

just another beautiful saturday afternoon in "family friendly" san francisco.....

Warning: Explicit pictures below, not suitable for kids. (Even though they were taken in public, in a park, in broad daylight, but alas this is the point of the post.)

Yesterday it was a gorgeous sunny day here in the city and Paul and I decided to wander down along the Embarcadaro with all the tourists to do some shopping at the Ferry Building. Imagine our surprise when we happened along this scene in the park in front of Embarcadaro Four (a busy shopping center directly across from an even busier tourist attraction - the Ferry Building and Saturday morning farmers market):

Yes, there was full frontal and this picture doesn't really capture just how many men were in their birthday suits...

As you can imagine, living in San Francisco, I'm pretty used to gay people and have no problem with them at all. They can be a tad over-sensitive but for the most part they are fun and interesting people to hang out with. But, man, this is the kind of the stuff that makes straight people anyone with some basic sense of decency, really, really irritated. Because I would have totally been just as offended if it were a straight couple making out and groping each other in a park where children were literally AROUND THE CORNER:

This is a picture of the other side of the metal structure in the first picture...Yup those are little kids playing at the fountain.

Why do some gay people think it is okay for them to do this? If you know the area at all, it is a tourist filled, family oriented area - we are not talking about a traditional area of the city where you know you might be exposing your kids to some questionable sights if you bring them there...But I guess now we have to pretty much declare all of San Francisco off limits to parents who don't want to explain to their three year olds why there are naked men making out with each other while other naked men wander about taking pictures. The worst part was that there was really no warning for any parents who might be leaving some of the other attractions in the area with their children...I saw a dad in a suit walking with his maybe four year old son, seemed like they were probably heading out to the street car heading home, he said to his son, "Look at the fountain!" and all I could think was that I really hoped they didn't walk around the fountain for some reason...or the dad would be walking into a lot more than he was expecting!

And you know this would be every bit as bad if it were naked men and women making out and groping each other in full view of children - but that wouldn't happen because I think even in San Francisco they would have been arrested! (At one point when we were coming out of the shopping center we saw a cop standing at the top of some stairs watching the goings on from a distance, basically just there to make sure nothing violent happened? Public nudity is apparently legal in this city, just like everything else is...)

Oh and the very best part? On the side where all the kids were playing in the fountain they were also setting up for a Crohns & Colitis Foundation event:

There are some words you can't really see in this shrunken down version under Camp Oasis...it says "Kids Corral." Why they chose to put the Kids Corral on the side closest to...well..."the other side" I have no idea.

If San Francisco becomes any more "family friendly" you'll have to have your ID checked just to get into the city...

and boy does this city love barry o

If you want to know what an America run by knee-jerk liberals would look like, well, look no further than the beautiful city of San Francisco:

Tourists are flocking to San Francisco in droves. Property and sales taxes are up. Unemployment is down. Residents and businesses are spending money - lots of money - to live and work in the city.

San Francisco is rolling in green. But it is also bleeding red.

Monday is Mayor Gavin Newsom's deadline to submit a budget that erases a $338 million deficit, and he has warned that the city's fiscal forecast is so bleak that hundreds of city workers could be laid off and services slashed. But it's not because the money isn't coming in, even despite poor economic times nationwide.

"We don't have a revenue problem - our revenue is strong," Deputy City Controller Monique Zmuda said. "Even though the economy's been good, our expenditures are growing at a faster rate than our revenues."

...

Last year, city officials approved a series of new labor deals with unions, giving workers like nurses, police and firefighters hefty pay boosts. Next year, those labor contracts are expected to cost the city $118 million more than they currently do.

Voters over the years have generously approved ballot measures that require the city to spend a fixed dollar amount on everything from public schools to public safety. This year, the so-called set-asides added up to $883 million, a figure that is expected to jump by $57 million more next year.

Add to that the millions in state cuts and the fact that the city can't tap its rainy day fund unless revenues are dropping, and what's left is a huge budget shortfall.

...

The size of the city workforce has ballooned in the past two years, bringing the city payroll to 27,885 people. That's about 1 city employee for every 27 residents.

That last part just boggles my mind. What's worse is that if you look at this database you'll find that there are 8,180 city employees making over $100k annually. That's 818 million dollars a year at a minimum just in salaries alone for 1/3 of the city's workforce. And it's actually a much higher number than that because if you look at the database you'll see the highest city paid worker is making $350,324 a year and that the number decreases at a modest rate over the next 409 pages. The number has got to be well over a billion dollars a year - not including the other two-thirds of the city's payroll.

Anyway, this is how liberals can manage to run what should be a prosperous city into the ground. This is where a love of unions and ever-expanding social programs leads.

Supporting some real Republicans

After reading Michelle Malkin's lead story for today, I decided to donate to the NC GOP.

Time to show the jackass at the top of our ticket who REAL conservatives support. McCain just couldn't resist the opportunity to throw some conservatives under the bus could he? So eager to maintain his status as a liberal media darling that he couldn't even be bothered to watch an ad put out by principled conservatives before he ran out and accused them of being racist.

Which, by the way, can someone explain to me why it's racist to simply point out the truth? Did the NC GOP lie? Did Obama not attend that man's church for twenty years?

fighting back in the 510

I'm not surprised that it has come to this in a city that averages a murder every two or three days.

I am surprised to see an SF Gate article actually suggest that it might not be a bad thing when good guys have access to some firepower and the balls to use it when the useless politicians have done nothing to clean up their city.

taking the words right out of my mouth

I don't know how many different times and different ways I've tried to explain this very thing to people - and as usual I could never say it better than John Hawkins:

I'll tell you why; because liberals look at equality in terms of outcomes. If there aren't X number of minority and poor students in a gifted class, it must not be equal.

However, that's a grotesque way to look at equality. Equality should be about equal opportunity, not equal outcomes. None of us born with the same abilities, inclinations, or environments and what that means is that life doesn't always break down into the neat little statistical categories that bureaucrats love so much -- nor should it.

I voted

Voted NO on all the state propositions, I would have voted for 91 except the pro-argument says to vote NO since the exact same thing has already been passed into law by the legislature/Arnold.

I only had time to stop by the California Secretary of State website before voting so I didn't even realize there were city propositions until I saw them on my ballot. I literally laughed out loud when I read Proposition C which actually suggests that San Francisco buy Alcatraz from the federal government and turn it into the - I kid you not - Global Peace Center! And a guy named Da Vid is going to run it. Not David, that's too "normal." He is Da. Vid.

Sigh, only in San Francisco.

Oh yeah, and I voted for Romney.

We get it already! (the whole baby-hating thing)

John Hawkins is live-blogging the State of the Union:

9:28: We no longer need embryonic stem cells. Republicans applaud. Democrats are apparently unhappy we no longer need to destroy human life for science. No applause.

Right on point, as usual. Paul pointed out the exact same thing as they panned across the audience. Odd that they wouldn't applaud a breakthrough in medical science. I guess removing the baby-killing aspect takes all the fun out of it for the Democrats.

Marcy Kaptur Gets Real Confused

Does anyone else think it might not be the best idea to let this woman have a say in our economic/fiscal policy? Why do politicians who don't know their head from their you-know-where when it comes to economics have the power to tax us?

(Anyone surprised she's a far left whack-job?)

Living amonst them

Unsurprisingly, San Francisco is a city full of ironic juxtapositions.

I can't even count the number of times I've overheard some hippies jabbering at the next table about the usual hippie crap - and then they go on to order dinner and wine that costs easily over $150 on two people without batting an eye.

Meanwhile, there are bums all over the place. Not that they're going hungry here either though. And apparently, a lot of them could have a roof over their heads if they so pleased.

So why not get into the program? There are gripes about the outreach workers, I suppose, that they pester residents to get rid of their drug or alcohol problems, but isn't that a small price to pay for a warm, dry place to live?

I'm going off on a tangent here but why is that even an excuse? And if someone says to you "I would rather do drugs and live like an animal in the street than have a roof over my head without drugs," well, what are you really supposed to do about that? Will increasing funding for the homeless really "help" someone like that? Is it even possible to help someone like that? And at what point is society not responsible for someone's personal decisions in the liberal mind?

Pretty sure there are no answers to any of those questions.
